'Bob Gurr: Living by Design' Documentary Airs Tonight on PBS SoCal, Available to Stream After Broadcast

Bob Gurr: Living by Design, a 2025 documentary film directed by Frank H. Woodward that chronicles the life and career of Disney Legend Bob Gurr, will broadcast and stream beginning on July 17, to coincide with Disneyland’s 71st anniversary.

Bob Gurr: Living by Design is a documentary that explores the life and career of Disney Legend Bob Gur. It will air tonight on PBS SoCal at 9 PM PDT and will be available for streaming after the broadcast.

The documentary has been licensed to PBS SoCal and will be broadcast from July 17 to the end of July. On PBS, the broadcast will only be available in Southern California; however, it will also be available as a free streaming program here, accessible to anyone with an internet connection.

Gurr was part of the original design team that built Disneyland with Walt Disney. He was the visionary engineer behind many iconic theme park attractions, and his designs are among the most influential in theme park history. He is best known for his work on The Haunted Mansion, the Monorail, the Matterhorn Bobsleds, and more. He started his career under WED Enterprises, designing the Autopia cars.

Bob Gurr worked with Walt Disney Imagineering for four decades, ultimately retiring in 1981. He didn’t stop working, however, venturing out to start GurrDesign, Inc. and then Sequoia Creative, Inc. It was during that era that he helped design the King Kong animatronic for Universal Studios Hollywood as well as consulting on the animatronic T. rex used in 1993’s original “Jurassic Park.”

In 1999, Gurr won the THEA Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2004, he was inducted as an official Disney Legend.
