Disney’s Saltwater, an Aquamarine Spinoff Pilot

Saltwater is the production title for a proposed Aquamarine series ordered as a pilot by Disney+ and Disney Channel. A pilot order allows Disney to produce and evaluate an initial episode but does not guarantee that a complete season will follow.
The new story centers on Coral, a teenager who moves to an idyllic seaside community and searches for answers about her mother’s disappearance. Her investigation leads to the discovery that her mother was a mermaid—and that Coral has begun developing magical abilities of her own.
Emma Roberts will reprise her role as Claire Brown from the original film as a guest star and will serve as an executive producer. Original Aquamarine director Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum is returning to direct and executive produce, while original producer Susan Cartsonis will also executive produce.
Released in 2006, Aquamarine starred Roberts and Joanna “JoJo” Levesque as best friends Claire and Hailey. The pair discover a mermaid named Aquamarine, played by Sara Paxton, after a storm deposits her in a seaside swimming pool. The film was adapted from Alice Hoffman’s 2001 novel. Disney has not announced the pilot’s principal cast beyond Roberts.
