The gorilla enclosure of Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail at Disney’s Animal Kingdom is back open following the introduction of a new male, but the new gorilla is not yet appearing for guests.

Bakari the male western lowland gorilla is 21-years-old and was transferred from the Saint Louis Zoo as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Western Lowland Gorilla Species Survival Plan. The species is critically endangered in the wild.

Bakari arrived at Disney’s Animal Kingdom on June 30 and the enclosure closed that day so he could begin his acclimation. He is reportedly very timid and was previously only around other male gorillas.

Though the enclosure reopened, Bakari is still getting used to his new home. For now, he’s remaining backstage during the day when the family troop is out and guests are around. After hours, he’s let into the enclosure on his own.
