Marvel Contest of Champions is celebrating the Summer of Spider-Man with a new July update featuring Hobgoblin, Black Tarantula, and more Spider-Verse promotions.

Hobgoblin and Black Tarantula Join the Contest

Marvel Contest of Champions is a mobile fighting game from mobile game studio Kabam that brings together heroes and villains from across the Marvel Universe. Players collect Champions, build teams, and battle through story quests, limited-time events, and competitive modes set within the Battlerealm, a cosmic arena where characters from different timelines, realities, and franchises can clash.

Later this July, Hobgoblin (Phil Urich) and Black Tarantula will join the roster alongside a limited summer event quest.

Hobgoblin will be available beginning July 16. This version of the character is specifically Phil Urich, who discovers the Goblin legacy connected to his family and becomes a new Hobgoblin armed with a glider, pumpkin bombs, and razor bats. Black Tarantula joins the roster on July 30. The character, Carlos LaMuerte, is a crime lord tied to Spider-Man’s street-level corner of the Marvel Universe.

The July Event Quest, “Last Laughs,” runs from July 8 through August 5. In the quest, Black Tarantula brings the Summoner into a strange investigation after lethal laughter begins spreading through the Contest. Heroes are being affected and sent after Black Tarantula’s territory, forcing players to determine who can be trusted. The clues point toward a mix of friends and foes, including a fire-covered Hobgoblin.

Kabam is also releasing a new “Web of Corruption” Motion Comic tied to the update.

The story follows Spider-Man Noir as he investigates a mystery in the Battlerealm involving symbiotes, crime bosses, Chronoserpent echoes, masked threats, shadowy magic, and other multiversal dangers. The Noir angle gives the update another Spider-Man variant while tying into the game’s ongoing multiverse-style storytelling.

The Squad Builder event returns with “Symbiotic Bonds,” running from July 15 through August 5.

This version of the event focuses on Spider-Verse Champions, Symbiotes, and a mix of Spider-Man’s friends and enemies. Players assemble a squad, choose whether to take on a regular opponent or go straight to the final boss, and have five opportunities to improve their team before the final battle.

Now is a great time to check out Marvel Contest of Champions, as new players can also participate in the Daily Bugle Headliners Bundle Giveaway beginning July 6. The 14-day supply drop gives first-time players access to 10 Spider-Man-inspired Champions, plus upgrade materials and other resources. The eligible Champions include:

Elsewhere in the Spider-Verse, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to release the latest chapter in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man journey, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day releasing on July 31.
