A number of new food items debuted today, October 11, at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, with many of them at Harambe Market. We visited the park to try them all.
Harambe Market
Chicken and Shrimp Rice Bowl – $14.99
chermoula-marinated chicken and peri peri-marinated shrimp on jollof rice with kachumbari tomato salad and tzatziki sauce
Our portion of this rice bowl from Harambe Market was quite large. It’s certainly filling, and we would recommend possibly splitting this dish with a friend unless you’re ending your day and don’t mind a heavier meal.
Both the marinated chicken and marinated shrimp add a nice, mild flavor to the dish. The marinade keeps the chicken nice and moist. The rice, however, is quite dry and very sticky.
The slices of cucumber and cherry tomatoes offer a nice sweetness and extra moisture to the dish that we think was necessary, given the dryness of the rice. The tzatziki sauce was creamy and added a dill flavor to the dish, so if you’re not a fan of dill, this might make the dish polarizing for you. You can always ask for the sauce on the side.
Overall, this is a very filling dish from Harambe Market, with a great portion size for the cost.
Chicken Rice Bowl – $12.99
chermoula-marinated chicken on jollof rice with kachumbari tomato salad and tzatziki sauce
As with the Chicken and Shrimp Rice Bowl above, this bowl includes the same marinated chicken, which comes in big chunks.
The rice in this bowl is still sticky and dry, though it gets some moisture and sweetness from the accompanying slices of cucumber and tomato salad, as well as the tzatziki sauce.
This dish will fill you up fast and leave you feeling somewhat heavy, so consider splitting it with someone.
Shrimp Rice Bowl – $14.99
peri peri-marinated shrimp on jollof rice with kachumbari tomato salad and tzatziki sauce
This dish is exactly the same as the Harambe Market rice bowls above, just with only shrimp as your protein.
We had five pieces of the marinated shrimp in our bowl, and they had a slight char to them.
Again, the rice here is dry, but is saved by the cucumber, cherry tomatoes, and tzatziki sauce.
Beef and Lamb Kofta Pita – $13.49
house-made beef and lamb kofta with a tzatiki sauce, chermoula, and house-made chips
This is a good-sized pita wrap that comes with house-made chips, which have a slight crunch to each bite.
We usually enjoy lamb, and there is a slight gamey taste from the lamb and beef here, as well as a light spice. Texture-wise, it has the feel of a dried-out meatball.
The tzatziki sauce has a slight dill pickle taste to it, but it’s not as strong as the rice bowl dishes.
The pita bread was softer than the Impossible Gatsby we had earlier in the day, though hard around the edges, as if it was left out for a bit.
Impossible Kofta Pita – $13.49
Impossible kofta with a plant-based aÏoli, chermoula, and house-made chips
What strikes us most about this dish is how similar it is in taste to the Impossible Gatsby at Kusafiri that we tried earlier in the day. Though the texture is totally different.
The chermoula sauce adds a nice creaminess, paired with the sweetness from the diced tomatoes and cucumbers.
The house-made chips are the same as that of the other pita option. Ours were not super oily, and had a nice crunch.
Harambe Salad with Chicken – $12.79
chermoula-marinted chicken with quinoa, grilled corn, black-eyed peas, crispy chickpeas, and a chermoula-herbed vinagrette (also available with shrimp for $14.79)
This was our favorite of the new food options at Harambe Market. it’s great for those looking to fill up on food without taking in as many carbs.
It includes a generous portion of marinated chicken chunks, paired with the refreshing crisp of lettuce. The grilled corn, black-eyed peas, and chickpeas added different protein sources as well as an added texture.
The tang from the vinaigrette mixed in very well with the salad and marinated chicken.
Mango Passion Fruit Cheesecake – $5.99
The Mango Passion Fruit Cheesecake is a very aesthetically-pleasing dish, thanks to the purple and white icing flowers on top of green leaves and stems.
This is not a thick slice of cheesecake, so don’t go in expecting that. Instead, it’s a very creamy, soft cheesecake.
The mango and passion fruit flavors come through well, with the mango in particular being very strong. The passion fruit flavor hits more on the back end of each bite.
The bottom layer of the cheesecake has a harder texture with almost a white chocolate taste to it. It’s a sweet and fruity option for guests looking for a treat.
