REVIEW: The Witches Road Cordially Invites You to the Third Episode of ‘Agatha All Along’

The trials begin as Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) and her reluctant allies start their journey down the “Witches Road.” As the coven presses on, we begin to unravel details of their pasts, as well as reveal even more mysterious secrets to be uncovered in the third episode of Agatha All Along, “Through Many Miles of Tricks and Trials.”

Agatha All Along Review: Episode 3 – Through Many Miles of Tricks and Trials

Agatha All Along: Episode 1 | Episode 2 | Episode 3

A group of six people stand around a table with wine bottles and glasses, intently looking at something out of frame.

We return to our rag-tag group on the Witches Road as they continue further into the mysterious forest around them. After learning the perils of stepping off of the path as the ground attempts to consume one member, they continue to find the path change. What began as a magically bright blue leaf-covered path turns into a sandy path leading to a beach house. Upon hesitantly entering the house, they find their outfits have changed as if to fit their surroundings in true “WandaVision” fashion.

Four people standing indoors, all appearing surprised or concerned, and looking in the same direction. They are dressed in varying outfits, from casual to more formal attire.

It is here they find their first trial, the trial of water, in the form of a formal card invitation from the “Witches Road” itself. After discussing the solution to its riddle, they partake in some wine left on a table. This begins a mysterious countdown.  They soon notice that the wine drinkers begin to exhibit symptoms, revealing they have been poisoned. As the coven’s potion witch, Jennifer Kale (Sasheer Zamata), begins to assess the situation, identifying the poison and their pressing need to make an antidote — in the witchiest way possible, of course.

Two people embrace while looking at a flooded kitchen. Water is spraying from a sink faucet, causing a woman standing nearby to cover her mouth in shock.

The witches then set out through the house for ingredients at Jennifer’s lead. However, they are all struck with personalized hallucinations, revealing more mysterious details of their pasts and motivations. Agatha eventually has her own, possibly revealing more truth behind the rumors of how she obtained the Darkhold, the magical tome she used to grow her powers in “WandaVision.” After a down-to-the-last-second finishing of the trial, the coven flees via an ominously-revealed exit through the kitchen oven, leading to a slide back onto the familiar forest path of the Witches Road, now littered with red leaves.

Two women sit on rocks in a dimly lit, foggy woodland area. One wears a colorful patchwork jacket and the other wears a light pink dress. Dead leaves cover the ground around them.

Episode 3 continues to pull us deeper into the mysterious backgrounds of the characters. The individual hallucinations expand on small details we received when meeting these characters while leaving us with even more intrigue as each scenario devastatingly affects each witch. Of course, these only scratch the surface of the mysteries surrounding each witch, leaving us with even more questions (like, will they really be able to bring each character through a full arc in just six more episodes?).

A person walks on a path in front of a house at dusk, holding a small dog. The house has illuminated windows, a porch light, and the number 2804 next to the door.

The mystery surrounding the “Teen” expands also. Previously, we saw how his identity was obscured from Agatha when his mouth magically became blocked or the sound of his voice disappeared. However, after a confrontation on the Witches Road, this veil persists for every member of the coven. They reveal that this is a mysterious magic known as a Sigil, and it clearly intrigues everyone, not just Agatha.

A woman wearing a brown jacket is looking down and reaching towards a baby inside a wicker bassinet in a dimly lit room.

Kathryn Hahn continues to portray Agatha in spectacular form, but the other characters are starting to shine in their own right. The show obviously follows along with the titular witch, but with Agatha being the devious, scheming, and sometimes outright mean character she is, the rest of the characters balance out her villainous ways. The characters continue to reveal more about themselves, drawing us in. This haphazard coven also seems to be bonding together more, though sometimes at the necessity of pushing Agatha to comply with the needs of the group.

Four individuals stand around a kitchen island holding hands, focusing on a shared activity. The kitchen is well-lit and modern in design.

I’m a sucker for a morally gray protagonist and a found family/unlikely allies story, and they’re starting to get into that groove. With another intriguing and entertaining episode, I continue to look forward to the rest of the series.
