A classic feature of Tom Sawyer Island can be spotted when looking closely at the “fun map” for the “Cars” expansion coming to Frontierland in Magic Kingdom, implying that it could return.
Barrel Bridges in Piston Peak
Disney released a new “fun map” for the “Cars” expansion on Tuesday. The area will replace Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and Liberty Square Riverboat, which will close permanently in July. The expansion will pay homage to Rivers of America with a smaller river and various water features.
Upon closer look at the map, we also spotted a pair of barrel bridges. There is currently a barrel bridge on Tom Sawyer Island, one of the most famous elements of the location.
Guests can walk across loosely hanging planks on floating barrels, between safety netting. The bridge results in a rocky, bobbing experience, but it is constructed safely so guests don’t fall off. Though fans will lose Tom Sawyer Island, it looks like the experience will live on in Piston Peak National Park.
Piston Peak is inspired by the Rocky Mountains and will have an animated aesthetic, but with sightlines incorporated into the design so guests don’t see car architecture in Liberty Square. The area includes a new original character inspired by classic Disney animated films. There will be two “Cars” attractions, an off-road rally race ride and a family fun ride.
What do you think about the barrel bridges living on in the new “Cars” area? Will you miss Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
