REVIEW: The Thai Boba Isn’t Really Boba at The Blue Dragon Pan-Asian Restaurant in Epic Universe

Gretchen McDermid

Since our initial restaurant review, The Blue Dragon Pan-Asian Restaurant has added a new Thai Boba beverage, and we returned to give it a comprehensive taste test.

Blue Dragon Thai Boba with Dalgona Coffee Foam – $12

One important note regarding this drink is that the Thai Boba is considered a mocktail and contains no alcohol. However, there is a version of this same drink called the Dalgona Khaosan Road that includes Mekhong Thai liqueur, which is similar to rum.

Moving to our main review, our reporter first noticed that this isn’t a true boba drink. Boba is traditionally made with tapioca pearls, but this drink includes popping pearls. As a result, you shouldn’t order this drink expecting the usual chewy boba texture, because the popping pearls give every sip an overwhelming popping sensation.

The pearls come in both brown sugar and coffee-flavored varieties, with the brown sugar pearls on the top and the coffee pearls close to the bottom. Neither of these were our favorite. The brown sugar ones are extremely sweet, and the coffee ones tasted a bit too artificial.

Regarding the milk tea itself, we also thought it was way too sweet. There was no balance between the tea and the sweetness, so you cannot taste the actual tea flavor at all. Our reporter also wasn’t the biggest fan of blending milk tea with coffee, since it makes both flavors a bit muddled. Our favorite part of the drink was definitely the Dalgona coffee foam topping, which we would eat by itself if that was somehow an option.

Overall, we liked the idea of this drink a lot more than the execution. Milk tea and coffee is already a somewhat strange combination, and we would definitely have preferred it without the popping pearls. We would never pay $12 for this, as there are several much better boba-style options if that’s what you are looking for. Plus, the rest of the menu at The Blue Dragon is so good that we couldn’t imagine ordering this instead of something else. We gave it one extra point simply for the Dalgona coffee foam.
