James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash has earned a whopping $345 million in box office revenue globally in its opening weekend. Of that total, $88M is from the domestic box office pull and $257M is from international markets, as Deadline reports.
This is the 2nd highest studio opening globally of 2025, behind only Disney’s Zootopia 2. The three Avatar films have now earned over $5.6B to date.
While impressive in its own right, the first weekend results still lag behind the previous installment – Avatar: Way of Water – which enjoyed a global debut of $435M according to Variety (and a domestic debut of $134M, sizable ahead of Fire and Ash).

It’s worth noting that, historically, Avatar films are known not for explosive openings. The previous two films have enjoyed remarkable box office staying power. As noted in the linked article from Variety, the original 2009 epic “Avatar” debuted to $77 million domestically and remained in first place for seven consecutive weekends, eventually climbing to $760 million in North America and $2.92 billion worldwide. The sequel also managed to hold onto the No. 1 spot for seven weekends and ended up earning $688 million domestically and $2.3 billion globally.
Avatar: Fire and Ash has landed within projections for its first weekend. Now the question remains if it will enjoy the long theater life seen with its predecessors, particularly with international audiences.
As James Cameron and Avatar star Sam Worthington discussed in a recent interview, the future of the franchise may ride on the success of this third installment.
Avatar: Fire and Ash’s critic review score on Rotten Tomatoes rests at 68%, which is the lowest in the trilogy (Avatar: The Way of Water got 76% while Avatar received 81%). The audience score by contrast sits at 91% at the time of writing.
