REVIEW: Gordon Ramsay at The Carnaby Opens in Downtown Disney With Beef Wellington, Sticky Toffee Pudding and More

Gordon Ramsay at The Carnaby opened on July 13, at the Downtown Disney District in Disneyland Resort. We tried several of the menu items to let you know our thoughts.

The Carnaby is excellent; a few items are pricey, but it feels justified, and most are really reasonable and comparable to other table service on property. The quality of ingredients and execution are high. Overall, 6 out of 7.

Gordon Ramsay at The Carnaby Opens

Pea Guacamole – $16

Shrimp Crackers, Spring Onion Oil

A very elevated version of guac in presentation, super light and fresh. The shrimp crackers have a subtle seafood flavor and a texture similar to pork rinds or chicharrones. The pureed guacamole itself is very smooth and light, with a stronger pea flavor than avocado. The spring onion oil is delicious and we suggest mixing it into the dish. While it is a nice option for a light, shared bite between two people, the portion is small for a table appetizer by itself, and the dish is not showstopping.

Beef Wellington – $73

Potato Purée, Fresh Herb Salad, Red Wine Demi

This signature dish is as incredible as it is decadent. The pastry crust is extremely flaky and buttery, the mushrooms are delicious, and the beef tenderloin is moist, tender, and cooked to a perfect medium-rare. The red wine demi-glaze is slightly bitter rather than sweet, which pairs wonderfully with the rich meat. The accompanying potato puree is thick, buttery, and starchy without being mushy. The stiffer potato pairs perfectly with this type of dish. The salad has a fresh citrusy vinaigrette dressing and is quite small. Although it is a pricier item, the ingredient quality justifies the price, and we highly recommend it.

Cottage Pie – $38

Beef Short Rib, Potato Crust, Baby Vegetables

This was very enjoyable, extremely flavorful, and well-cooked. The baby vegetables are wonderfully prepared, and the mashed potato crust has a softer, creamier consistency than the one served with the Wellington, providing a great textural contrast. The beef short rib is tender and falls apart easily, though the meat itself could have been a bit more flavorful on its own. It loses one point because it functions more like an upscale version of “loaded mashed potatoes” rather than a traditional cottage pie, but we would absolutely order it again

Sticky Toffee Pudding – $15

Warm Date Cake, Ice Cream, Toffee Sauce

This is the perfect version of this kind of dessert. The date cake is warm, moist, perfectly baked, and has autumn-like spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg. The vanilla bean ice cream is smooth and creamy without being icy. The toffee sauce has the perfect sticky consistency and is not sickly sweet or artificial. Because the base cake and ice cream are not overly sweet, the addition of the rich toffee sauce balances the dessert perfectly, making it surprisingly light rather than heavy. We would order this again and even come back for this alone after a park day.

Chocolate Tart – $16

Chocolate Ganache, Salted Caramel, Chocolate Sauce, Whipped White Chocolate

This was incredibly rich, heavy, and decadent, and a must-try for chocolate lovers, though it is quite messy to eat. It features a crispy, crumbly crust that pairs well with the thick chocolate. The whipped white chocolate topping is light and fluffy without any artificial flavor. However, the salted caramel flavor is completely overpowering and hard to find. We rated it a five because eating all the heavy chocolate layers together masks the nuanced individual flavors and makes it feel a bit too rich. We enjoyed the components much more when tasted separately.

Clarified Pineapple & Jalapeño Margarita – $21

Coconut Cream Washed Cadigo 1530 Blanco, Pineapple & Jalapeno

It is served with craft ice, which prevents it from diluting too quickly. It is a spirit-forward drink but extremely smooth, lacking the harsh bite typical of silver tequila. It is not overly sweet or overly spicy, but rather a beautifully balanced cocktail with subtle hints of fruit and jalapeño spice. It’s one of the best elevated margaritas we’ve had.

Rating out of 7: 7

Tea and Whiskey – $22

Garrison Brothers Small Batch Bourbon, Lemon, Earl Grey Tea, Bitters & Egg White

We were a bit disappointed because the drink is quite subtle and lacks strong flavors. We expected more distinct tea, lemon, and bourbon flavors, but only got a slight hint of citrus and light bourbon, with almost no tea flavor until a few sips in. While it is exceptionally smooth, refreshing, and lacks any bite, we’d prefer a more spirit-forward cocktail and would not order it again.
