Brie Larson returns as Carol Danvers a.k.a. Captain Marvel alongside Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan. Parris debuted as Monica, who was portrayed as a young child in “Captain Marvel” by Akira and Azari Akbar, in “WandaVision.” Vellani introduced the world to Kamala in “Ms. Marvel” last year.

‘The Marvels’ Trailer

The first teaser trailer for the Phase Five film was released in April. The new trailer reveals more of the plot featuring Zawe Ashton as Dar-Benn, a Kree warrior seeking revenge against Captain Marvel. Dar-Benn forces the three “Marvels” to switch places every time they try to use their powers.

Samuel L. Jackson also reprises his role as Nick Fury. He’s currently appearing in “Secret Invasion” airing on Disney+.

“The Marvels” hits theaters on November 10, 2023. It was originally scheduled for release this month but was delayed, and Disney’s new “Haunted Mansion” movie took over the July 28 release date.

MCU Connections

“The Marvels” acts as a sequel to “Captain Marvel,” a 2019 film based on Marvel Comics that introduced the character Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel, on the big screen. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the 21st film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Set in 1995, the story follows Danvers as she becomes Captain Marvel after Earth is caught in a galactic war between two alien civilizations.

In “Ms. Marvel” season one, Kamala Khan is a big fan of Captain Marvel. She is gifted a special family heirloom that changes her life forever. As a Muslim-American teenager growing up in Jersey City, she sometimes feels ostracized at school and home until she obtains superpowers similar to the heroes she loves.

In the final end credits scene for “Ms. Marvel,” Captain Marvel and Kamala Khan suddenly switch places, with Carol landing in Kamala’s room. The scene ends with a text crawl that teases their upcoming appearance in “The Marvels.”

As seen in “WandaVision,” Monica Rambeau was exposed to the energy of Wanda Maximoff’s hex, which gave her superpowers. She gained the ability to absorb and manipulate energy, as well as the ability to fly and phase through solid objects. Monica’s powers made her a powerful ally against Wanda.

Monica was a young child in “Captain Marvel,” the daughter of Carol’s best friend Maria, who has since passed away. Monica and Carol have had a falling out so aren’t on the best terms in “The Marvels.”

Created by writer Roger Stern and artist John Romita Jr., the character first appeared in “The Amazing Spider-Man Annual” #16 in October 1982.
