Giant Disney100 Mickey Statue Relocated Due to Downtown Disney Construction

The giant Disney100 Mickey statue located in Downtown Disney District has moved due to ongoing construction in the area.

The Mickey statue is now sitting next to the planter recently revealed when construction walls moved back slightly. The sign next to Mickey instructs guests not to climb on the statue.

The statue is one of many installed throughout Disneyland Resort. Most of them are inside shops, but there are also the more permanent Mickey and Minnie statues at Disneyland Park.

The Mickey statue was previously at this corner of the former ESPN Zone building that is now blocked with fencing and scrims. ESPN Zone closed in 2018. A new resort hotel was originally intended for this area, but complications between Disneyland Resort and the local government effectively shelved the project.

downtown disney reimagining

The rest of the Downtown Disney District reimagining continues, though, with several new shops and restaurants planned for the shopping center. Construction is mainly based on the west side, which will have new mid-century Space Age structures based on the architecture popular in California throughout the 1950s and ’60s.

All of this work on the resort’s entertainment, shopping, and dining hub is merely one minuscule portion of larger plans connected to the DisneylandForward initiative — a multi-year public planning effort that seeks to map out the next thirty years of vision with the City of Anaheim and Orange County.

DisneylandForward primarily aims to obtain more flexibility for land the resort received approval to develop in the 1990s, ideally adding a mix of theme park, hotel, retail, dining, and entertainment on the eastern and western edges of the resort. Currently, Disneyland has used less than half of the millions of square feet already approved for development, according to the Orange County Register. All plans stay within the existing 500-acre property in Anaheim with no physical expansion or additional acreage.

Disney 100 Years of Wonder

Wondrous Journeys Concept Art

In honor of 100 years of The Walt Disney Company, Disney Parks & Resorts across the world have launched new entertainment and offerings.

The 100 Years of Wonder celebration began at Disneyland Resort in January 2023 when new nighttime spectaculars launched: “Wondrous Journeys” at Disneyland and “World of Color – ONE” at Disney California Adventure. There is a platinum Mickey statue (which had to be fixed because the Walt Disney quote on the base was incorrect) and a platinum Minnie statue in Disneyland.

“Celebrating Disney100 at the Disneyland Resort” is a guided tour that includes a walk through both parks, the drawing experience at Animation Academy, a digital download of a photo taken in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle, a Disney100 snack, reserved viewing for the Magic Happens parade, and an exclusive pin. The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia is hosting Disney100: The Exhibition, honoring The Walt Disney Company’s centennial. The exhibit includes a lifelike Walt Disney hologram. Disney100: The Exhibition will remain at The Franklin Institute through August 27 and in Munich through September 3. The North American installation will then tour cities such as Chicago and Kansas City, while the European installation will visit London and then other Europe and Asia destinations through 2028.

Once Upon a Studio

Disney debuted a new short to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Walt Disney Animation Studios at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. The studio brought more than 40 voice actors in to reprise their roles and pulled from the archives to use dialogue from past actors like Robin Williams as the Genie. “Once Upon a Studio” combines 2D and 3D animation alongside live action to create a tribute to the studio’s century-long legacy. The short will be attached to Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Wish” upon its release later this year on November 22.
