Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin

Disney's Emperor Zurg with glowing robotic arms in a colorful, futuristic, Buzz Lightyear space-themed setting.

“To infinity and beyond!”

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is another home run scored by Disney in the category of Great Family Rides. The premise is simple: You board an Omnimover vehicle equipped with two “light guns” that you aim at targets throughout the course and attempt to outscore your fellow rider/opponent. The idea is to defeat the Evil Emperor Zurg by scoring as many points as possible, though an actual defeat is never really displayed. Each vehicle also has a steering joystick that allows riders the chance to swivel their vehicles to get better aims at their desired targets.

The playing arena has a myriad of targets to choose from and your goal is to decipher which targets are more difficult which will result in a higher point value for that specific target. An LED readout on the dashboard of your vehicle displays each player’s score so you can keep an eye on your status versus your opponent’s. The shooting is fast and furious, so much so that you will almost certainly cramp up a little before the whole contest has concluded. Day-glo painted scenery covers the landscape, some stationary while others move to increase shot difficulty. It’s loud, it’s garish, and it’s a helluva lot of fun if you just let yourself run with it. Your ride will conclude with a final readout of your score to determine your final rank as a Space Ranger.

And, of course, you exit through a gift shop.

Behind the Schemes:

The Omnimover vehicles are constructed to allow a 360-degree spinning action that will either entertain or aggravate your fellow passenger, depending on how seriously they are taking the contest. These vehicles will sometimes slow or stop for either a breakdown or slow guest loading, at which time your “light gun” will still fire and you can rack up even more points than would be possible during a normal ride-through. Should you find yourself in this situation, take full advantage of it. If your opponent is not aware of this bonus, you can really clean up as they turn their head side-to-side while grumbling about the holdup.

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is found in the building that once housed the aeronautic dark ride If You Had Wings sponsored by the now defunct Eastern Airlines, which was later refurbished as Delta Dreamflight. The ride path appears to be exactly the same and there are even some Easter Eggs hidden within the journey: Keep a sharp eye out for three chickens; these were originally used in the former attractions.
