Monsters Inc Laugh Floor

“I’m watching you, Wazowski, always watching…”

Looking for a good spot to get off your feet and have a couple of chuckles? If so, then Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor is a great option. Based on the monstrous Pixar hit film from 2001, Monsters, Inc., the attraction places its emphasis on the greater amount of energy that can be harnessed from laughter than screams of terror. Filmgoers will immediately recognize the literal one-eyed host of the festivities, Mike Wazowski, who explains the history of Monstropolis and the importance of laughter to keep the city up and running. After a brief appearance by Wazowski’s foil, Roz, to foreshadow the barbs to come – at Wazowski’s expense, of course – the audience is invited into the venue to help fill more canisters of the ha-ha go-go juice.

A clever spin to the setup is the option for guests to send texts containing their own jokes that may wind up in the live show. These usually fit into the two categories of Kids’ Jokes or Dad Jokes. Very rarely does a submission fall outside of those boundaries, but it’s all in good fun, so it’s best to just lean back and enjoy the ride.

Once inside the theater, guests are treated (or subjected) to a show featuring CGI characters voiced by unseen live actors, an impressive effect that is very similar to that of Turtle Talk with Crush at EPCOT. Punchlines are delivered in hopes of getting positive responses from guests, though the characters have very little fear of delivering duds which only adds to the fun. One unsuspecting audience member will repeatedly be picked on and referred to as “That Guy,” a device that can be even more entertaining when said guest can’t figure out what’s going on.

By the end, all is well and good in Monstropolis and the show comes to a close.

Behind the Schemes:

Voice actors are all members of the Actors’ Equity Association and are usually quick witted, most likely due to a heavy background in improvisational theater. Because they are Equity players, the attraction can occasionally wind up being temporarily closed due to contract disputes. The most recent shutdown ended in 2020, and for the time being, things seem to be somewhat amicable between Disney and the association.

Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor is housed in the same building that once held such attractions as the 360-degree films America the Beautiful, American Journeys, and The Timekeeper, which starred the late comedian Robin Williams.

Reality Check:

The attraction went through a few different names before settling on Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor. The mere fact that this name (and its acronym) made it past the final cut is impressive and we’ll leave it at that.

This is one of the few remaining attractions on property where guests are specifically focused on and displayed to the rest of the audience. Anything could happen when the camera zooms in, so should you be lucky enough to be featured as “That Guy,” please remember where you are and try to behave yourself.
