Disney Looking At Will Smith To Play The Genie In The Live Action “Aladdin”

According to Deadline, Will Smith is in talks to play The Genie in Disney’s upcoming live action remake of “Aladdin”. Don’t shoot the messenger.

From Deadline:

Will Smith is in talks to take on the genie role made famous by the late Robin Williams in Disney’s live-action Aladdin from Guy Ritchie, we hear. The adaptation of the animated feature follows the studio’s strategy of bringing its classic animated titles to life and so far it has been a goldmine, most recently with Beauty and the Beast which has already grossed over $1B worldwide. Smith had previously been in talks with Tim Burton about Dumbo but that did not materialize and we’re told these talks are also early.

Like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin will be a live-action musical and that would fit well with Smith who is not only an actor but was known to the world for his musical prowess as The Fresh Prince rapper before he hit the little or big screen. The production is gearing up for a long, six-month shoot, so that is one consideration. It is supposed to start in the U.K. in July and wrap early next year.

    • That didn’t stop Kazaam from being made. The only bad complaints about that movie was Shaqs acting and rapping. Plus the Broadway Genie is black, so it’s not like it’s new territory exactly.

  • Now this is a story all about how
My life got flipped-turned upside down
And I’d like to take a minute
    Just sit right there
I’ll tell you how I made this kid the prince of Agrabah

    • In west Agrabah he was born and raised
As a streetrat is how he spent most of his days
Chillin’ out maxin’ relaxin’ in the skids
And stealing some bread, then giving it to kids
When a couple of guards who were up to no good
Started making trouble in his neighborhood
he got in one little fight and he got handcuffed
Little did they know he was a diamond in the rough

        • He got broken out of prison by the royal Vasir
How was he supposed to know Jafar wasn’t being sincere?
He was looking for my lamp in the Cave of Wonders
He found a magic carpet and plenty of plunder

Well, the cave caved in and he couldn’t make it out
And this is where I came in, here about
He rubbed my lamp and WOO
          I appeared
I sprang with the quickness like lightning, with an ear ring and a beard

          • When I came out of the lamp his head started to spin
He said his name was “Al” and I said I was a Jinn
I would grant him 3 wishes, the kid had chutzpah
But I thought, “Nah, forget it.”
            – “Yo, carpet to Agrabah”

          • We pulled up to the castle at about 2 or 3
And I yelled to the sultan “Yo homes check out Prince Ali”
            I looked at the kingdom
            Surrounded by hoops and hurrahs
To sit on the throne as the Prince of Agrabah

  • I’m a huge fan of Will Smith but they should totally get James Monroe Iglehart to play genie! He’s been incredible on broadway for years (AS the genie), put him in the movie!!!
