REVIEW: Salt & Straw Ice Cream Brings Creative Flavors to Downtown Disney Anaheim

by Ciara Trexler and Chad Freeman

The much-anticipated Salt & Straw has finally opened in the Downtown Disney District. Replacing the former Häagen-Dazs, this Portland-native ice cream features a variety of unique flavors that many people are not used to seeing on an ice cream menu such as Dandelion Chocolate Hazelnut Cookies & Cream, Honey Lavendar, Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper, and Pots of Gold with Rainbows. For those who got worried reading those flavors, don’t worry! They do have several traditional flavors also, such as Double Fold Vanilla, Gooey Chocolate Brownie, and Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons. Their creativity is matched by equally fresh ingredients. We were able to sample several flavors and can tell you first hand that you can tell that they have a quality product!

Sightglass Coffee Cashew Praline

This delicious ice cream starts with a cold brew base made with Sightglass’s Grostar (a San Francisco based coffee company), Utamagro beans, lightly caramelized cashews mixed into praline cream based ice cream. The results are fantastic. The blend of the flavors makes for one of the tastiest options on the menu. If you have ever enjoyed a coffee based ice cream elsewhere, you will probably enjoy this flavor.

Pots of Gold & Rainbows

If you’ve ever enjoyed a bowl of Lucky Charms then you will love this ice cream. They sort through thousands of boxes of Lucky Charms by hand separating the marshmallows from the whole grain cereal. They soak their cream in the cereal to give it an authentic Lucky Charm like taste. They then swirl in the marshmallow pieces to give it an eye popping look that is sure to bring smiles to everyone who orders it.

Chocolate Gooey Brownie

Chocolate ice cream with house baked brownies swirled throughout the ice cream make this flavor one you won’t want to miss. These aren’t ordinary brownies though, they have marshmallows baked into them! Every bite of the ice cream has brownie in it. If you like chocolate ice cream or brownies chances are high that you will love this flavor!

Dandelion Chocolate Hazelnut Cookies & Cream (Vegan and Gluten Free)

Salt and Straw teamed up with Dandelion Chocolate to create this indulgent, vegan, and gluten free ice cream flavor. It is a dark chocolate ice cream made with coconut cream and hazelnut milk, gluten free and vegan oreos crumbled and mixed in with ribbons of the dandelion chocolate swirled in. Really unique and tasty option for those who wish to eat vegan or gluten free!

Honey Lavender

They steep lavender petals in local bee honey to create this unique ice cream flavor. If you are the adventurous type you will find that this ice cream makes you feel relaxed like you are sitting in a field surrounded by lavender while indulging in honey ice cream.

Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons

Salt and Straw team up with The Meadow (a Portland based Salt Shop) to make this flavor. The sea salt is mixed in with their cream base before they swirl in ribbons of hand-burned caramel to give it a rich, sweet, and salty flavor. Again, if you know your palate (knowing whether you like salty food or not), this could be a fantastically amazing flavor or could be an overly salty mess. It is one of their most popular flavors, so take our write up with a grain of salt. Most of us who have tried loved this flavor, though one of us thought it was a bit too salty.

Here are other flavors that we did not try during our visit:

  • Roasted Strawberry Coconut (v, gf)
  • Black Olive Brittle & Humboldt Fog Goat Cheese
  • Salted Malted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
  • Double Fold Vanilla
  • Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper
  • Freckled Mint TCHO-colate Chip (vegan, gluten free)

They also have three special flavors until the end of the month of October:

  • The Great Candycopia
  • Mummy’s Pumpkin Spiced Potion (vegan)
  • Creepy Crawly Critters

If you are an ice cream lover, you will no doubt enjoy Salt & Straw. Their ice cream is light, fluffy, and creamy – almost like cool whip. Their menu features a variety of flavors that are sure to appeal to any palate. While the price may higher than a scoop of ice cream at Gibson Girl in Disneyland, we have no doubt that Salt & Straw will be both a successful and welcomed addition to the Downtown Disney District.

  1. Fun fact: We don’t actually sort through boxes of Lucky Charms to get the rainbow marshmallows, they come pre-packaged ;)
