RUMOR: The Muppets to Star in Variety Shorts Series Coming to Disney+

After some recent struggles to capture attention, it looks like the Muppets may be returning to the format that made them stars.

According to The DisInsider‘s Cami Cabrales, the felt-y, fuzzy, and funny troupe will star in a series of variety shorts coming to Disney+. The unscripted series is rumored to feature three different segments, including a game show, a cooking show, and a talk show (likely hosted by Miss Piggy, not unlike her role on the short-lived 2015-16 ABC series, The Muppets). Each segment won’t run longer than ten minutes, keeping things short and sweet.

The Muppets became superstars in the variety format with The Muppet Show, which ran from 1976 to 1981, and returned to variety in the MuppeTelevision segments on The Jim Henson Hour in 1989, and later on Muppets Tonight from 1996 to 1998.

Since it was announced that Disney would launch its own branded streaming service, it’s been rumored that the Muppets would be featured in a new series on what would become Disney+. And late last year, Kermit the Frog confirmed that the Muppets would be doing something “big” in 2019. Reportedly, the series is “likely” to premiere on the service when it launches on November 12th, with shooting rumored to happen June 9th-18th.
