“Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil” Rules The Box Office At #1

“Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil” debuted at #1 at this box office this weekend with a return of $36 million at the domestic box office. Overseas, “Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil” made $117 million, which brought its worldwide box office total to $153 million. “Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil” was able to dethrone “Joker” from its number one spot and even beat another new release, “Zombieland 2: Doubletap”.

Unfortunately, that was the only good news for the film as it came in way below box office expectations. The sequel to “Maleficent” could not even beat the original box office debut of “Maleficent”, which brought in $69 million domestically for its opening weekend back in 2014. “Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil” also had the lowest opening this year for a Disney film. Previously, “Dumbo” held that record with a domestic opening of $46 million.

Disney has definitely been ruling the box office this year with five of their films grossing over $1 billion worldwide.

Here is a list of the top ten movies at the worldwide box office this year provided by Box Office Mojo:

  1. Avengers: Endgame – $2,797,800564
  2. The Lion King – $1,650,117,825
  3. Spider-Man: Far From Home – $1,131,535,039
  4. Captain  Marvel – $1,128,274,794
  5. Toy Story 4 – $1,069,600,804
  6. Aladdin – $1,050,636,876
  7. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw – $758,794,635
  8. Joker – $737,529,004
  9. Ne Zha – $700,547,754
  10. The Wandering Earth – $699,760,773

  1. As a big fan of the first Maleficent movie, I feel like the sequel held up pretty well. There wasn’t enough Maleficent in it, but overall I thought the film was still entertaining, and she’s still my number one villain. I seriously loved the costumes, and wish there were more merchandise to showcase them.
