Walt Disney World Railroad to Remain Closed Until 2021 Due to TRON Lightcycle Run Construction at the Magic Kingdom

The Walt Disney World Railroad has been closed since the beginning of 2019 for track work in relation to TRON Lightcycle Run construction. Images have circulated of missing track near Tomorrowland as work is done to reroute the railroad through the TRON attraction.

It has been speculated that the railroad would remain closed until TRON Lightcycle Run was ready to open due to the proximity to the railroad. Now, we have confirmation as internal refurbishment calendars have shown the Main Street Railroad Station will remain closed for all of 2020.

Interesting to note, however, is that the Fantasyland and Frontierland Stations are listed as reopening at the beginning of 2020. At this time, it is not known if the refurbishment schedule for these stations has been updated yet, or if the railroad will operate in “shuttle mode” back and forth between the two stations, as it has in Disneyland in previous times.

Stay tuned to WDWNT for updates on this story and many more.

  1. The railroad did in the past operate in “shuttle mode” years ago. I visited there when the train went backwards to the Toon Town area (they even had a sign made up that promoted “Ride the train backwards to Toon Town”). If I recall they were building Splash Mountain at the time but if someone has more thorough details please let me know.
So….. Why not do that again? At from Main Street over to Frontierland.

  2. What a shame! LOVE the idea of deadheading the train between fantasy land and frontierland, main street stations!
The train is always a relief from the frenzy and tiredness at the end of the day; and the bottleneck at IASW and PP.
    Let’s hope!!

  3. The railroad is scheduled for a two or three year unscheduled downtime like similar railroads around the world

  4. More surprising than the shutdown is that Disney would invest this kind of time and money in a Tron ride when that franchise hasn’t really been all that successful.

    • The important part is the Roller Coaster – Even if the tron theming fails horribly for some reason, they can always pull a Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout/Tower of Terror or Norway to Frozen.
