REVIEW: New Valentine’s Day Cherry Almond Cupcake and Boxed Red Velvet Whoopie Pies Have Us Falling in Love at Walt Disney World

For some, the way to their heart is through their stomach.

Valentine’s Day treats are starting to pop up across Walt Disney World; we want to help guide you to true snack love and save you from possible heart (and stomach) ache. Gasparilla Island Grill at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa has two new treats available that are sweet enough to share. A cherry and almond cupcake (topped by Mickey and Minnie) caught our attention first, followed by a trio of heart-shaped red velvet whoopie pies. We’re hoping this is love at first sight.

These whoopie pies are very creative and sure to impress. Each one is made up of two fluffy red velvet cakes with a cream cheese mousse filling. White chocolate “XOXO” piped on gives just a little extra touch of love to these cakes.

The box even has a sticker of Mickey giving Minnie a box of chocolates. Personally, I’d prefer a box of these whoopie pies over chocolate any day.

These two-bite cakes are just enough for sharing, but nobody would blame you if you didn’t. The filling is creamy and lighter than your typical frosting. There’s just the right amount of filling to offset the two pieces of red velvet cake. This snack combines unique presentation and delicious cake for an absolute win.

These are definitely love at first bite.

The cherry almond cupcake has a sweet white chocolate image of Mickey and Minnie, on top of white and pink buttercream frosting.

We expected to find almonds somewhere on top of or inside the cake, but it turned out that the base of the cupcake is actually an almond-scented sponge cake. It was incredible and totally caught us by surprise. We’ve encountered a few questionable desserts here at Gasparilla Island Grill, so we really have to give them a lot of credit for this one.

The dense cake is complemented by a thick cherry compote filling and smooth buttercream frosting. We can see nice chunks of cherries in the center of the cake. The flavor is bright, with just a hint of tartness.
