Beyoncé announced her new visual album, Black Is King, which is inspired by The Lion King, will debut on Disney+ on July 31. This comes a year later after Beyoncé voiced Nala in the live-action remake of The Lion King, directed by Jon Favreau.
The new visual album is based on the music from “The Lion King: The Gift”, and will feature artists like Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell, 070 Shake, Tierra Whack, Jay-Z, Blue Ivy Carter, and Jessie Reyez, as well as African artists including Wizkid, Shatta Wale, Burna Boy, Mr. Eazi, Tiwa Savage, Tekno, Yemi Alade, Busiswa, and Salatiel.
In a statement to Variety, Disney and Beyoncé’s Parkwood Entertainment said that Black Is King “reimagines lessons of “The Lion King” for “today’s young kings and queens in search of their own crowns.”
The official Black Is King trailer is available to view on the home page of Beyoncé’s website, here.
The surprise announcement of Black is King comes not long after Disney and Beyoncé’s negotiations of a $100 million mega-deal that would see the singer/actress sign with Disney for three movies.
