PHOTOS: A Socially-Distanced Flag Retreat Ceremony at the Magic Kingdom

While the Flag Retreat ceremony has continued to be performed daily at the Magic Kingdom since the park closed in March, the Cast Member previews mean that the ceremony is once again being performed in front of guests, who are invited to watch at a distance from behind the central planter.

Three members of Walt Disney World security assemble to retire the flag on the main flagpole for the evening, all wearing face masks.

The flag is lowered…

… and then folded in half, and then in half again.

The flag is then folded in a triangular pattern before it’s retired.

Prior to the temporary closure, the flag would then be handed to a guest Veteran and marched in a small procession down Main Street, U.S.A.

Serving as a symbol of an enduring spirit during its darkest period, it’s gratifying to know that guests can once gain witness it in person.
