PHOTOS, VIDEO: Magic Kingdom Tests Fireworks For First Time Since COVID-19 Park Closure

Last updated:

The skies over the Magic Kingdom were ablaze tonight in a potential test of the “Project Nugget” 50th anniversary fireworks show—that, or they were just testing out new fireworks shells after a long run without fireworks. Nighttime spectaculars were indefinitely discontinued when the parks reopened in mid-July, but tonight marks the second fireworks test since reopening, following a late September test at EPCOT for the upcoming “Harmonious” show.

The initial tests were perimeter fireworks, brightly colored in bursts of three or four across the night sky.

We were somewhat perplexed by these odd, half-smiley face, half-Mike Wazowski fireworks.

Here we have some red and rose gold fireworks, the latter of which had a pulsing, glittering effect. You can watch the fireworks test from Disney’s Contemporary Resort in our YouTube video below:

Permits for Project Nugget were first filed in early August, believed to be the codename for the 50th anniversary fireworks spectacular coming to the Magic Kingdom next year. Ahead of tonight’s testing, Disney alerted guests and neighbors via a community update post:

and who knows if it will be enhanced just like in the Disneyland version with new scenes and more, especially use of different actors for certain like Scar (who i think his voice should be provided by David Oyelowo,) Mickey should be voiced by Bret Iwan (but in the scene where he confronts Snake Jafar, who knows if Chris Diamantopoulos would voice Mickey for that scene)
