Although ‘Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind’ was left out of D23’s roundup of what to expect in 2021, it seems that work is plugging along at a good rate. We’ve checked on the building’s construction progress every few days, and Disney has shared looks at the ride vehicles on the coaster track testing and giving its first rider, Baby Groot, a test drive. Now we’ve seen more promising news as additional ride vehicles were making their way across property today, being delivered to EPCOT. We snapped a few high-quality, close-up photos to bring you the first detailed look at the coaster trains.

The coaster cars were being transported, two to a flat-bed tow truck, towards EPCOT. The vehicles were wrapped in cellophane to protect them on their journey.

The two cars are sat on a makeshift roller coaster track to keep the wheels sitting properly. This will then be connected to an actual piece of track, and the cars rolled off the bars and on to the line of the ride.

We were able to get right up close to the wheel assembly as the truck drove along. Even when installed in the ride, few but the ride maintenance workers will get such a close-up, detailed view of these working parts of the coaster.

The wheel assembly consists of the three wheels together that grip the tubular steel roller coaster track. The wheels on the bottom are called the underfriction or up-stop wheels, which hold the coaster to the track and stop it from flying off on a hill. The side friction wheels can run on either the outside or inside of the track, and help keep the train from sliding left or right during the ride. These side friction wheels are located on the outside of the track. Finally, the top wheels are called tractor wheels, or running wheels, and they are the wheels that take the full weight of the train and roll it along the track. These wheels may lift off the track during an airtime hill or loop, but the up-stop wheels stop it from going… up.

The massive black box of electronics that sits above the wheel assembly is the spinning part that allows these “storytelling” ride vehicles to turn in any direction during the ride and shift the riders’ focus just where the Imagineers want it to be.

These photos confirm the ride vehicles are two to a train, as was shown in the preview from Disney. This means what you see on the back of the flatbed are one full train that will be sent through the ride.

  1. I so Excited for the Guardians of the Galaxy cosmic Rewind will be awesome ride for next year.

  2. As you can see at the front of the train there’s a piece that Is jutting out with a large circle on it, that seems to show that the sets of two will be attached to another set of two or more sets of two. similar as to how top thrill dragster or millennium force attach their cars together. They are put together like a large ball joint. See photo attached
