When Universal Studios Hollywood reopens on April 16th after its yearlong COVID-19 closure, “The Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash” will open to guests as well. The ride was in technical rehearsal during “Taste of Universal” and we were able to catch a ride.

A digital sign outside displays information about technical rehearsal to hopeful riders. To the left are the height requirements: riders must be at least 34″ inches to ride and those under 48″ must have a supervising companion. The ride is wheelchair accessible.

The ride vehicles are modeled after cardboard boxes. This one features the Weiner Kingdom logo, a location seen in the first film.

The queue line twists in and out of different apartments, where guests can see their favorite pets from the films in their “natural” habitat.

In one room you can meet Max and Duke as they play a game of Jenga by stacking their dog bones.

After leaving Snowball’s room, it’s time for guests to hop into their very own cardboard box and go on a journey through the world of The Secret Life of Pets.

Once riders are onboard the attraction, they transform into puppies! Max, Duke, Gidget, and Snowball lead a journey through the streets of New York City — culminating with being adopted into a forever home.

The ride stars the movies’ original voice cast (with the exception of Max, whose voice actor was replaced for the second film and the attraction). It is packed with pets, featuring 64 animatronics.

Like Disneyland Resort, Universal Studios Hollywood is only selling tickets to California residents at this time. For more information about the reopening, check out their website.

  1. I don’t get why they did the seats like it’s a rollercoaster. Does Universal want people to be uncomfortable?

  2. That looks great – the queue looks as fun as the ride! Such a rarity to see animatronics used in a queue.
