Disneyland Resort Expands Sustainability Efforts With New Food Waste Bins

There is no doubt that there is an overwhelming amount of waste disposed of daily throughout the Disney Parks. Disneyland Resort specifically has been recovering food scrap waste since 2014, and sending it to a third-party vendor to be converted into feed for farm animals.

Disneyland is now introducing a new set of food waste bins, starting as a pilot at Galactic Grill in Tomorrowland. These new bins are a test by the park’s environmental team to be able to separately capture organic material and dispose of it in environmentally friendly ways.

Disneyland Resort recently announced a goal of achieving zero waste to landfills by 2030. Reducing the amount of food sent to landfills is an important part of this strategy. It will also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as food releases methane when it decomposes in a landfill.

“It’s our responsibility to create immersive experiences and happiness for our guests, but to do so in an environmentally sustainable way. We have a responsibility to do and be better for our cast members, our guests, our community, and future generations.”

Guests are invited to be part of this effort. The new bins encourage them to dispose leftover food into the food waste bins and pour out any remaining liquids in the funnels inside the mixed recycling bins.

  1. RIP custodial cast. This is awesome from an environmental standpoint but the extra labor is going to be insane and it will be very interesting to see how they do trash runs as I don’t think bags are going to do it for food only waste. One thing’s for sure anyone doing food waste runs will probably need to keep an extra costume in their area locker.
