After a long day at the parks before the Disney Merriest Nites event at Disneyland, we were ready for dinner. Luckily, the food is available at 7 p.m., one hour before the event officially begins. We stopped at Royal Street Veranda to try the Red Beans and Rice Stew.
Red Beans & Rice Stew – $11.49
Spiced Red Beans simmered with Ham and Andouille Sausage, topped with Jasmine Rice and served in a Bread Bowl
This dish was very hearty, with a touch of heat. This is less a stew than the menu would have you believe and more of cooked beans with rice.
We suspect the ham was replaced with shredded beef, but it worked quite well. The andouille sausage was sliced and a touch overdone, but the flavor is great. It didn’t work within the small confines of the bread bowl, but as a garnish or even a side dish, it is very welcome and pairs well with the beans and rice.
The spice isn’t too heavy, nor is the heat, making for a more accessible dish for all palates. It’s a shame that this creole classic isn’t on the menu year-round, because we would get it again and again.
