As the new Omicron variant spreads across the country, the state of Florida has broken the record for number of new COVID-19 cases in one day.
Florida reported 31,758 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, breaking a record for the most cases in one day since the start of the pandemic in the United States in March 2020, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
According to the Florida Department of Health, the statewide new-case positivity rate rose to 13.8% during the holiday week. The week before had a 5.3% new-case positivity rate, and 2.6% the week before that.

Hospitalization rates are not close to what they were for delta and patients are not nearly as sick.
