‘Skip the Straw’ Signs Start Appearing Around Walt Disney World

On the Walt Disney Company website, it says, “The Walt Disney Company’s commitment to environmental stewardship goes back to our founding nearly 100 years ago.” Four years ago, Disney Parks stopped automatically giving out plastic straws and lids, to reduce single-use plastic usage, and made them available by request only. Now, we’ve started seeing signs appearing throughout the Walt Disney World Resort that say “Skip the Straw.”

The sign says, “Thank you for skipping the straw and lid to protect our oceans! If you need a paper straw or lid, please as a Cast Member.” They also include a QR code for guests to learn more about Disney’s Environmental Sustainability program.

We have seen these signs at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort’s Landscape of Flavors and Disney’s Pop Century Resort’s Everything POP Shopping & Dining. We were recently at the Magic Kingdom resorts, but have yet to see these signs at those locations. It will only be a matter of time before they will be found throughout the entire Walt Disney World Resort and Disney Parks worldwide.

Paper straws have always been found at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park long before they became commonplace throughout Disney Parks.

This is from Disney’s 2030 Environmental Goals Program:

“Beginning in 2018, we set a series of commitments to eliminate single-use plastic straws, plastic stirrers and polystyrene cups at all owned and operated locations across the globe, to transition to refillable in-room amenities in our hotels and on our cruise ships, and to reduce the number of plastic shopping bags in our owned and operated parks and on our cruise lines.

As a result, we have eliminated over 200 million plastic straws and stirrers, completed removal of polystyrene cups, reduced
plastics in over 15,000 of our guest rooms by 80 percent by replacing all disposable toiletries with bulk amenities and
minimized plastic merchandise bags.”

  1. Some folks have physical limitations and require a straw to properly drink. This is why Disney can not get rid of the straws. The ADA says that our disabled community has the right to expect minimal accommodations for disabilities. Most of us bring our own reusable straws with us as most can not use the paper ones, for various reasons.

  2. The problem isn’t plastic straws, it’s the amount of meat and dairy guests are consuming.

It’s patronising to the cause when Disney and guests think they’re helping by not using a straw, which isn’t when the issue.

What happened to the plant based options being rolled out to ever food point? Vegan options are still so limited at Disney parks, which further highlights the limited actual help Disney and guests are making to help tackle these environmental issues.
