The official Disney Princess lineup includes various female protagonists of Disney media, though not all are technically princesses, and not all Disney princesses are included.

The official lineup is Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, Moana, and Raya, who was added last year. Merida is notable as being the only Pixar character in the lineup. Anna and Elsa from “Frozen” are not included, as they are marketed separately and are technically both queens.

The official line was created by former Disney Consumer Products chairman Andy Mooney. Mooney came up with the idea at a Disney on Ice show.

Standing in line in the arena [of a Disney on Ice show], I was surrounded by little girls dressed head to toe as princesses…They weren’t even Disney products. They were generic princess products they’d appended to a Halloween costume. And the light bulb went off. Clearly, there was latent demand here. So the next morning I said to my team, “O.K., let’s establish standards and a color palette and talk to licensees and get as much product out there as we possibly can that allows these girls to do what they’re doing anyway: projecting themselves into the characters from the classic movies.”Andy Mooney, New York Times

The annual World Princess Week — celebrating Disney Princesses and real women — will take place from August 20 through 26. Last year, Brandy performed the week’s theme song, “Starting Now,” at Disneyland. Disney Parks also had special food, artist demonstrations, and giveaways. Raya was named an official Disney Princess during last year’s celebration, too.
