Tokyo DisneySea is testing new contactless security scanners similar to the new ones we’ve seen permanently installed at Walt Disney World Resort and tested at Disneyland Resort in recent years.

In 2020, Tokyo Disney Resort implemented increased security measures ahead of the Summer Olympics, installing metal detectors and X-ray scanners.

This system remains in place at the north entrance to Tokyo DisneySea and at Tokyo Disneyland.

At the south entrance, the new contactless scanners have been installed. The “contactless” part means security Cast Members theoretically don’t need to handle a guest’s bag unless the scanners flag something potentially dangerous.

The X-ray scanners are still in place but are covered with tarps while the new system is tested. The metal detectors are also still nearby in case they need to be used.

Like the systems used in the US, guests walk through these two poles, which come to about shoulder level. If the scanner detects something potentially dangerous, like a weapon, the security Cast Member will be alerted and have the guest step to the side for further checks.

Guests walk through the scanners one at a time, at the Cast Member’s instruction.

A small screen on the right-hand pole also informs guests when to wait and when to walk. At least right now, the system doesn’t move quite as quickly as the one at Walt Disney World, though it seems to still be in a testing phase and may become more streamlined later.
