Construction work has resumed in the Universal Studios Florida lagoon for the park’s new nighttime spectacular. We hadn’t seen significant work in the lagoon since May, when the old show platform was being dismantled.

On Wednesday morning, we saw one crew member on a temporary steel dock, overlooking the lagoon.

Two more crew members were actually in the water.

The lagoon was partially drained in April, and you can still see the old water level on the rocks in the background.

The divers were putting together a scaffolding structure that now sticks a foot or two out of the water.

Nearby, more pieces of scaffolding were staged on one of the permanent docks. Sheets of plywood are on the dock to keep it protected.

Universal Orlando’s Cinematic Celebration” concluded its five-year run in March 2023 to clear the way for a new experience. The show debuted in 2018 as a successor to “Universal’s Cinematic Spectacular: 100 Years of Movie Memories,” offering a visual spectacle of water projections, music, limited fireworks, and footage from various popular film franchises. For a brief time, a preliminary segment promoted the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, broadcast by NBC.

Since the closure of “Universal Orlando’s Cinematic Celebration,” there has been no news about the new nighttime spectacular, although there were rumors of it using drones and Universal was hiring a full-time Drone Operations Manager earlier this year.

Unlike Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort is directly in the City of Orlando, which limits their ability to engage in excessive, loud, bright nighttime pyrotechnics. “Cinematic Celebration” relied heavily on water screens. Drones could be another solution.
