A recent article by the Los Angeles Times has shared that residents living near Universal Studios Hollywood are finding the new coaster too noisy.

Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift Noise Complaints

The Toluca Lake residents have complained the screams from the new Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift roller coaster is “like someone getting murdered.” The roller coaster had been quiet until Universal Studios began testing with human riders. The screams are constant and piercing, even with double-paned windows. As Karen Rodgers, a Toluca Lake resident for more than 20 years said:

It was never a roller coaster kind of park. When a lot of residents moved in, it was about the history of film, and everything was inside the park. This is different because it’s hanging over a neighborhood. It’s just disappointing.

Sound levels were a major concern from neighboring property owners before construction on Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift even began, leading Universal to conduct sound tests back in 2023. Universal stated the coaster would have sound reduction technology, and earlier this year, sound shield panels were installed around certain sections of the tracks.

Made with white frames and green-tinted glass, the sound shield panels mimic the design of the covered walkway to the lower lot of Universal Studios Hollywood. They also could serve a double purpose to protect walkers from wayward items falling out of guest pockets on the ride.

Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift

Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift will hit a top speed of 72 mph – the fastest coaster at any Universal theme park – while having four inversions along a 4,100-foot-long track. This speed necessitates the use of double-sided lockers for guests to store their loose items, a first for Universal Studios Hollywood.

Though we still don’t have an official opening date, Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift is certainly close to opening, as the ride has already been added to the Universal Studios Hollywood app.

Another version of Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift is currently under construction in Universal Studios Florida. It replaces Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, which closed in August 2025.
