Hogwarts Legacy, the video game inspired by the “Harry Potter” franchise, sold 22 million copies in 2023, making it the best-selling game of the year in the U.S.A.

The game, produced by Avalanche Studio, launched on February 10, 2023. Approximately 2 million of the 22 million units were sold during the December holiday season.
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment president David Haddad told Variety,
But it’s not just the unit sold that I’m so proud of, it’s just that it delighted the fans so much. It brought Harry Potter to life in a new way for gamers where they could be themselves in this world, in this story.
And that’s what the team at Avalanche set out to do when they were developing the game and I think that’s really why it resonated so well and remains the best-selling game of the year in the entire industry worldwide. That’s a position that typically is held by one of these incumbent’s sequel games and we’re so proud that we’ve been able to break into the top ranks.

In-game data states that 819 million potions were brewed, 1.3 billion magical plants were harvested, 593 million magical beasts were rescued, and 4.9 billion dark wizards were defeated.
Haddad and his team are working on more “Harry Potter” video games. A previously announced Quidditch game is currently in the beta-testing phase.
“We don’t have any particular announcements on exactly how and when [the Quidditch game] is going to come to the market, but we are working to get it designed in a way just to delight fans,” Haddad said in the Variety interview.
According to research company Circana, Hogwarts Legacy was the year’s best-selling game in the U.S.A. This marks the first year since 2008 that a Call of Duty or Rockstar Games title has not topped the list. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III was the second best-selling.

Steam included Hogwarts Legacy in their best games of 2023. The game includes a reference to Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure at Universal Islands of Adventure.
