“Percy Jackson and the Olympians” has taken over the rotating gallery space of Walt Disney Presents at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Screen-used costumes and props are on display and guests can enjoy a sneak peek of the series, which began streaming on Disney+ and Hulu last month. The series is based on the books of the same name by Rick Riordan, with season one based on the first book, “The Lightning Thief.”

Percy Jackson at Walt Disney Presents

Near Walt Disney Presents, behind the Chinese Theater, is a “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” billboard. It shows Percy kneeling on a beach with his glowing golden sword. A giant wave circles above him and lightning crashes in the distance.

In “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” Percy is a 12-year-old who learns he is the son of the Greek god Poseidon. He spends his summers at Camp Half-Blood, where he’s safe from monsters. In “The Lightning Thief,” he goes on a quest to recover Zeus’ master lightning bolt after he’s accused of stealing it.

The marquee of Walt Disney Presents now advertises the “Percy Jackson” sneak preview as well as the live-action Ariel meet and greet. Both offerings are at the end of the main exhibit of Walt Disney Presents, whch tells the story of Walt Disney, his career, and The Walt Disney Company.

The image on the marquee features Percy holding Zeus’ lightning bolt with his friends Grover and Annabeth beside him. Grover is Percy’s satyr protector. Annabeth is a fellow camper and the daughter of Athena. The trio are portrayed in the series by Walker Scobell, Aryan Simhadri, and Leah Sava Jeffries respectively.

A poster for the Disney+ series is also by the door to Walt Disney Presents. It features the trio with lightning crashing around them and the Minotaur behind them. The Empire State Building and other New York City buildings is in the corner. In the series, the home of the gods has relocated from Mount Olympus in Greece to the Empire State Building.

“Percy Jackson” posters featuring the main characters also hang from nearby lampposts. The first season of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” will be eight episodes and five have aired on Disney+ so far.

Inside, the costumes and props are in the space outside The Walt Disney Theater doors. The sneak peek of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” plays on rotation with “Walt Disney: One Man’s Dream,” a 15-minute documentary about Walt Disney. A timer between the theater doors counts down to the next show. Guests can exit Walt Disney Presents through the theater or by going back to the front entrance of the exhibit.

The costumes and props are in glass display cases throughout the theater waiting area. Next to this bench is Zeus’ costume and a case of “magical posessions.”

A sign on the “magical posessions” case reads:

Percy’s world is filled with wonderous artifacts from ancient Greece. Some items appear as ordinary objects to mortal eyes, like Percy’s sword Riptide, which looks like a standard ballpoint pen.

Percy can use Riptide by removing the pen’s cap and turn it back into a pen by putting the cap on the blade. If he loses the sword/pen, it always returns to his pocket.

The items in this case include a copy of the original “Lightning Thief” novel by Rick Riordan. “The Lightning Thief” was released in 2005 and the Disney+ series is the third adaptation of it. The film “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” was released in 2010 while a stage musical called “The Lightning Thief” premiered in 2014. The musical was performed off-Broadway twice, toured the U.S. twice, and performed on Broadway in late 2019 to early 2020.

Also in the display case is Zeus’ master bolt, a golden metal sword-like prop shaped like a classic lightning bolt. There are two piles of drachmas, the golden coins used by the demigods, gods, and other Grecian figures in “Percy Jackson and the Olympians.”

There is a tin of cards and dice for the Mythomagic game. The fictional trading card game was introduced in the third book of the series, “The Titan’s Curse.” It was introduced much earlier in the TV series as a training tool for half-bloods. Rick and Becky Riordan named their production company, Mythomagic Inc., after the game.

Both the pen version and the sword version of Riptide (Anaklusmos in Greek) are in the case. Annabeth’s dagger is also on display. Both weapons are made of celestial bronze, a material that is only deadly to demigods, gods, and monsters but harmless to mortals.

Zeus’ costume is a relatively simple suit. It’s dark blue with pinstripes. He pairs it with a light blue paisley tie and an even lighter blue button-up.

The king of the gods serves as a powerful foil and foe for Percy and his friends. A complex figure, Zeus demands the return of his master lightning bolt, no matter the cost.

Tish Monaghan designed the “Percy Jackson and the Olympian” costumes.

Zeus is portrayed by Lance Riddick, who sadly passed away in March 2023. He had completed filming before his death. “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” will be his last live-action television role. He will also make posthumous appearances in the films “Shirley” and “Ballerina,” and voices Lex Luthor in the upcoming “Kite Man: Hell Yeah!” series.

This display case shows off Mr. D’s shirt, various Camp Half-Blood props, and Percy’s capture the flag armor. At Camp Half-Blood, the game of capture the flag is much more violent than it is for us mortals — although killing is still not allowed.

Mr. D, a.k.a. the god Dionysus, is the camp director of Camp Half-Blood as a punishment by his father, Zeus. He wears a tiger-patterned Hawaiian shirt as he’s associated with the animals in Greek myth. Mr. D is portrayed by Jason Mantzoukas.

A Camp-Half Blood necklace is in the center of the case. Each summer, campers decorate beads to represent that year’s activities and add it to their camp necklace. Campers who have been there for several years, like Annabeth, have several beads.

A sign describes Camp Half-Blood:

Hidden deep in the woods of Long Island lies an idyllic looking summer camp, where young demigods train to face mythic monsters by participating in classic camp activities with a dangerous twist.

Annabeth’s sword and shielf are behind the necklace. Annabeth only uses these during capture the flag. On her quest with Percy and Grover, she just carries her dagger, which was a gift from her friend Luke Castellan.

Percy’s armor includes a helmet with a blue plume and a leather tunic with a blue stripe across it. He wears the tunic over his classic orange Camp Half-Blood T-shirt. During capture the flag, the camp is split into a blue team led by Annabeth and a red team led by Clarisse La Rue, daughter of Ares.

There are two celestial bronze shields. One has a red v-shaped design while the other has a blue v, representing the two teams.

Percy doesn’t wear this armor for most of the series. His, Grover’s, and Annabeth’s everyday outfits are in this display case in the center of the room. When Percy and his friends set out on their quest, he dons a simple blue T-shirt, green flannel, jeans, and sneakers.

Grover wears a jacket, yellow tee, cargo shorts, and red sneakers. Annabeth wears a purple-pink jacket, a blue shirt, and green pants with brown shoes. Annabeth also has a Yankees ball cap — but you won’t normally see her wearing this because it’s actually magic and makes her invisible.

Based on the best-selling book series, this coming-of-age adventure follows the epic trials of the modern-day children of the ancient Greek gods. When Percy (Walker Scobell) is accused of stealing Zeus’ ligning bolt, he and his friends set out on a cross-country quest to set things right, encountering legendary figures from Greek mythology and uncovering dangerous secrets along the way.

One of the legendary figures Percy and co. encounter is the god of war, Ares. His costume is also on display and includes a black leather duster. He wears this over a black T-shirt and jeans. His belt has a silver snake buckle. The display also includes his motorcycle helmet.

Ares is portrayed in “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” by Adam Copeland.

The last costume is that of Medusa, potrayed by Jessica Parker Kennedy. Medusa is a gorgon with snakes on her head instead of hair and can turn people into stone with just a look. In the show, she wears this cream-colored dress and cloche hat, with a veil that covers her face. The only color is her red heels.

Fans can take pictures in front of this backdrop featuring waves crashing against white Grecian columns. “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” is in the center. Lightning cuts through the sky behind the series name.

The doors to the theater are decorated with large versions of the series posters. On this set of three doors is the poster featuring Percy holding the lightning bolt out in front of him, with Grover and Annabeth next to him. The lightning bolt glows blue.

On the other door is the same poster as the billboard outside featuring Percy kneeling on the beach with Riptide in his hand.

The last episode of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” season one will air on January 30, 2024. Last month’s premiere broke records for Disney+.
