‘TRON 3’ Starring Jared Leto Begins Filming With Director Joachim Rønning

Director Joachim Rønning posted a photo on Instagram indicating production has begun on “TRON 3.” The picture is just of a director’s chair under red lighting with a “TRON” logo on the back. The “O” is replaced with the number three, turning it into “TR3N.”

Rønning captioned the photo “WEEK 1 ON THE GRID” with blue frisbee emojis.

For Disney, Rønning previously directed “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” and co-directed “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” with Espen Sandberg.

Jared Leto has been attached to a third “TRON” films since 2017 but development didn’t begin to move forward on the threquel until 2020. Previous reports indicated it would be called “TRON: Ares” and would “focus on the emergence of a sentient program that crosses over into the human world that is not ready for contact.” (via THR) Leto is set to play the program, named Ares.

The “TRON 3” script is by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne. Russell Allen is executive producing while Leto, Emma Ludbrook, Jeffrey Silver, and Justin Springer are producing.

The cast also includes Evan Peters (“X-Men” films, “American Horror Story”), Cameron Monaghan (“Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order” and “Jedi: Survivor,” “Gotham”), Jodie Turner-Smith (starring in the upcoming “Star Wars: The Acolyte” series), Greta Lee (“Russian Doll,” “Past Lives,” “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”), and Sarah Desjardins (“Riverdale,” “Yellowjackets,” “The Night Agent”).

The first “TRON” film was released in 1982. A sequel, “TRON: Legacy,” hit theaters in 2010. 

TRON Lightcycle Run

TRON Lightcycle Power Run opened with Shanghai Disneyland in June 2016. A duplicate of the roller-coaster dubbed TRON Lightcycle / Run opened in February 2023 at Magic Kingdom. It’s located in Tomorrowland at both parks. The ride puts guests on lightcycle-inspired ride vehicles. It reaches a maximum speed of nearly 60 mph.
