Fans of late 2000s Disney Channel shows have reason to celebrate, as a sequel series to “Wizards of Waverly Place” has officially been greenlit, according to ComicBook.com.
“Wizards of Waverly Place” Sequel Series
The series, currently using the working title “Wizards,” will begin production this April, with original series stars Selena Gomez and David Henrie to return as a guest star and series regular, respectively. The pair will also serve as executive producers. Along with the announcement, Disney shared the above photos — both a throwback and a present-day shot of Gomez and Henrie in character.
Rounding out the cast will be Janice LeAnn Brown, Mimi Gianopulos, Alkaio Thiele, and Max Matenko. The series will air on both Disney+ and Disney Channel later this year. The description is as follows:
The series follows an adult Justin Russo, who has chosen to lead a normal, mortal life with his family, Giada, Roman, and Milo. When Justin’s sister Alex brings Billie to his home seeking help, Justin realizes he must dust off his magical skills to mentor the wizard-in-training while also juggling his everyday responsibilities — and safeguarding the future of the Wizard World.
“Wizards of Waverly Place” aired from 2007 to 2012 and served as a launching point for a then mostly-unknown Gomez. During its run, the series won two Primetime Emmys, and spawned the 2013 television movie, “The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex.” Recently, “Wizards of Waverly Place” was featured at Disneyland Park, with a photo opportunity set up for the nostalgia-filled Disney Channel Nite.
“Wizards of Waverly Place” captivated hearts with its spellbinding adventures and big laughs, creating unforgettable memories for kids and families everywhere.
We can’t wait to step back into the magical world of “Wizards,” inviting longtime fans and a new generation to experience the enchantment alongside Selena, David, and our incredible cast and crew.
