Marvel Studios’ ‘Blade’ Reboot Loses Director Again

Another director has stepped down from helming Marvel Studios’ “Blade” reboot, starring Mahershala Ali.

According to Deadline, the film’s (second) director, Yann Demange, has exited the reboot. He has been attached to the film since it was announced in 2019, though replaced Bassim Tariq in 2022 when the latter left the project. Ali is still on board to star as the titular character.

Sources shared with Deadline that Demange’s departure was amicable, though it likely signals another delay on the film’s horizon. Variety states that he left the project weeks ago. The film was scheduled to begin production originally in the fall of 2022 before the exit of Tariq, followed by more delays in 2023 due to the Writers Guild of America strikes.

Screenwriter Eric Pearson is the latest to take on the task of writing the “Blade” script; at least five other writers have written scrips on the film, including Michael Green, Stacy Osei-Kuffour, Michael Starrbury, Beau DeMayo, and Nic Pizzolatto, according to Variety.

In Marvel Comics, Blade (a.k.a. Eric Brooks) possesses many of the traditional powers associated with vampires without their weaknesses, like sensitivity to daylight — where he continues his mission to rid the planet of the blood-sucking creatures. While he hasn’t yet made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut visually, he was heard in a post-credits scene of 2021’s “Eternals” directed by Chloé Zhao.

For now, “Blade” is scheduled to release on November 7, 2025, moving from its original date of September 6, 2024. However, with this latest delay, it’s likely the film will be pushed out even further.

While the movie might be some time away, fans at least have a new video game featuring the Daywalker to look forward to, developed by Marvel Games and Bethesda Softworks.
