Burrito, Tacos, Street-Style Watermelon, and More Return for Plaza de la Familia 2024 at Disney California Adventure

Shannen Ace

Between Halloween festivities at Disneyland Resort, visit Plaza de la Familia in Disney California Adventure to celebrate Día de los Muertos. The “Coco”-themed party takes place in Paradise Gardens Park. Several returning food items are available during the celebration at Paradise Garden Grill.

Carnitas Wet Burrito – $13.99

House-made Pork Carnitas, Spanish Rice, Refried Beans, Cilantro, Onions, Salsa Verde, and Salsa Roja, served with House-made Tortilla Chips

A red plate with a combo of enchiladas covered in red and green sauce, served with tortilla chips, lime wedges, and a side of salsa. Served at Plaza de la Familia.

Most of the Plaza de la Familia dishes are big, heavy entrees — not for snacking. First up is the Carnitas Wet Burrito. The burrito isn’t of great quality. The tortilla is doughy and there’s not a lot going on inside. We mostly just tasted refried beans, which we didn’t like. When we could taste the pork, it was decent. The salsa roja and salsa verde both offer a nice spice but can’t save the plate. The tortilla chips are basic.

Al Pastor Tacos – $13.99

Pineapple-Achiote-marinated Pork Tacos with Avocado Spread, and Tomatillo Salsa, served with Spanish Rice and Refried Beans

Plate with three tacos, mexican rice, and refried beans topped with cheese, served with a slice of lime on a yellow dish.

These look good but are just okay. We wish they had more going on. The pineapple-achiote marinade gives it a nice citrusy kick. The pork is excellent. But the tortillas are chalky. The tomatillo salsa helps.

Huarache (Plant-Based) – $12.99

with Soy-based Chorizo Beans and Seasoned Steak Tips, topped with Lettuce, Cheese, Avocado Crema, and Tomatillo Salsa, served with Spanish Rice and Refried Beans topped with Nopales Pico de Gallo

A plate of mexican food featuring a taco with lettuce and cheese, rice, refried beans, and guacamole on a yellow plate.

This is too dense and chewy, which is not the consistency you want under so many toppings. It feels incohesive. Nothing works well together. You can’t taste the mushrooms at all. The avocado crema is overwhelming. And you only get a hint of spice from the tomatillo salsa.

Street-style Watermelon (Plant-Based) – $6.99

with Lime Juice, Chile-Lime Seasoning and Chamoy

A slice of watermelon covered with a red chili sauce on a yellow plate, outdoors.

This is more of a snack item and thankfully, it’s good. You could make it at home (or on the street) but it’s not a bad portion for the price. The seasoning adds a nice spice and the lime gives it a citrus flavor. The watermelon is fresh. This is refreshing, albeit basic.

Chile Verde Chicken Flautas – $13.99

topped with Avocado Spread, Shredded Lettuce, Crema, Queso Fresco, Tomatillo Salsa, and Pickled Onions, served with Spanish Rice and Refried Beans

A plate of mexican food featuring two crispy taquitos topped with lettuce, sour cream, and cheese, served with sides of rice and refried beans.

The best Plaza de La Familia meal by miles is the Chile Verde Chicken Flautas. The chicken is moist, tender, cooked well, and nicely seasoned. The avocado’s creaminess works well with the crunch of the deep-fried tortilla and lettuce. We feel like it’s missing something but can’t say what. The rice and refried beans are nothing special.

Vanilla Layer Cake – $7.59

Layers of Vanilla Cake filled with a Cinnamon Mousse and Sweet Cream Cheese Frosting

A slice of layered cake with colors white, orange, pink, and red sits on a black plate. The cake is topped with decorative frosting and a sugar skull embellishment, perfect for Halloween food. In the background, lush greenery adds to the garden paradise vibe.
A slice of layered cake with pink, orange, and red tiers, topped with white icing and colorful decorations, served on a black plate—perfect for a Halloween food paradise.

For dessert is an adorable cake that unfortunately looks better than it tastes. Cinnamon is the overwhelming flavor here. It’s not a terrible cake but it’s not great.
