Disney Tells Guests to Shelter Indoors After Hurricane Milton

Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World stands majestically, surrounded by lush gardens and elegant statues, under a cloudy sky as the resort reopens after Hurricane Milton.

In an update posted this morning to the Walt Disney World Weather Updates webpage, Disney says the following:

Walt Disney World and Vero Beach Resort Hotel Guests: Please continue to shelter inside while we assess the storm’s impact. We’ll let you know when it is safe to be outdoors.

During our drive around property this morning, we noticed a lot of vegetation and downed trees. A few signs were down on World Drive, including a larger one which we saw crews working to restore.

Walt Disney World Resort and Disney Springs are closed today, October 10, 2024. This includes the Disney Springs parking garages, Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park, and the two miniature golf courses. Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party has also been cancelled for this evening, and event tickets will be refunded.

Ticket expiration dates for partially-used multi-day tickets will be adjusted to expire on October 11, 2025. Learn more about ticket validity following Hurricane Milton. Disney will also not enforce cancellation policies for dining and other experiences until further notice. Prepaid bookable experiences will be automatically refunded within 7 to 10 business days.

Walt Disney World Transportation is temporarily unavailable, as well as the Minnie Van service.

Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground and the Treehouse Villas at Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa are also temporarily closed. These accommodations are likely to remain closed until Sunday, October 13.

Walt Disney World will continue operating select dining locations for guests staying in Disney Resort hotels only. Guests are encouraged to check My Disney Experience for the latest details. Operating hours and availability may be adjusted as necessary without notice.

Disney also recommends planning ahead and visiting any food court or quick-service dining location to pre-purchase breakfast and lunch for today, October 10.

The following activities are available for Disney Resort hotel guests:

  • Free Disney movies in your Resort hotel room
  • Surprise character visits and more family fun in the lobby
  • Free play in the arcade starting at 4 p.m.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a State of Emergency for the Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resor areas on October 5, when Hurricane Milton was still a tropical storm.

Walt Disney World paused hotel reservations for October 9 and 10, due to the storm. Park reservations have also been blocked for these two days. Hotel cancellation and change fees have been waived for resort guests, with Disney extending their policy twice to accommodate those who have had to adjust plans due to the hurricane.

We began seeing Cast Members prepare for the storm around the resort on October 9, including Magic Kingdom.

A curfew was issued for parts of Walt Disney World yesterday, October 9, and is in effect through at least 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Disney CEO Bob Iger posted wishes of safety for Floridians ahead of the storm making landfall in the state on social media.

It is estimated that Hurricane Milton could cost Walt Disney World $200 million.
