Disney was the only movie studio to make $2 billion at the domestic box office this year, marking a major recovery for the company after a series of underperforming films.
Disney Makes $2B at Box Office
Disney had three of the country’s top five performing films in 2024. “Inside Out 2” was the biggest film of the year with a $652.9 million domestic gross. It became the highest-grossing animated film and the 11th highest-grossing film of all time.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” made $636.7M, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, the second biggest film of the year (after “Inside Out 2”), and the 12th highest-grossing movie of all time.
“Moana 2” has grossed $342M after three weeks in theaters and is already the fifth highest-grossing movie of 2024.
Disney has also seen success with 20th Century films “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” ($171M) and “Alien: Romulus” ($105M). “Mufasa: The Lion King,” in theaters this Friday, is expected to make $50M during its opening weekend. Disney will also release “A Complete Unknown” on Christmas Day under their Searchlight banner.
This is the seventh time since 2010 that Disney has grossed over $2 billion at the U.S. and Canada box office. The last time was in 2022.
The company saw little success in 2023 with films like “Elemental,” “Wish,” “The Marvels,” and “The Haunted Mansion.” As Deadline points out, this year’s success seems to reflect Bob Iger’s policy of quality over quantity.
