The newest Disney Vacation Club venue at Walt Disney World, Island Tower at Disney’s Polynesian Villas & Bungalows, has been a main topic of conversation, and criticism, since its announcement and recent opening on December 17. But, now that it is open, is it worth staying there?
Theming
Many have criticized the tower, primarily the exterior, for having a generic hotel appearance. The appearance resembles that of a high-end Hilton or Marriott more than a Disney hotel. While the design is admittedly subdued, especially compared to the rest of Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, there are subtle theming elements that harken back to Polynesian design and architecture.
The interior is also more sterile than the rest of the resort but manages to fit in tasteful thematic features that pay homage to Polynesian culture, primarily the four elements – earth, fire, wind, and water. Carvings in the pillars differ depending on what element they represent, and the ceiling features wicker elements with sea creatures painted on them.
Since the Tower heavily emphasizes “Moana,” theming directly from the franchise is abound. However, more subtle references can also be found, such as the many manta ray paintings, carvings, and designs.
Dining
After trying EVERYTHING from Wailulu Bar & Grill, the signature dining location at the Tower, we can safely say this spot is a win. The food was great overall and the incredible views make this one of the best ways to view the Magic Kingdom fireworks.
Some of our highlights include the “grilled fish of the day” dinner entree and the garlic shrimp appetizer. The Banana Old Fashioned was a fantastic drink option as well.
The Rooms
The rooms try to balance cultural theming, modern technology, and Disney magic. While the “Disney magic” may be a bit lacking here, the rooms feel modern and comfortable. For some, that may be exactly what you are looking for, while others prefer the more prominent theming of older Disney resorts.
That being said, there are multiple subtle Disney touches and thematic artwork that set these rooms apart from a non-Disney hotel. Many of the rooms feature gorgeous views of the Seven Seas Lagoon, though the view may vary depending on room location.
Final Thoughts
While this resort may have its ups and downs, it may be worth a visit to decide for yourself if it fits your preferences for a hotel. Even if you are not staying at the resort, booking a reservation at Wailulu Bar & Grill is a fantastic choice, especially to watch the fireworks.
If you are a Disney Vacation Club member, it could be worth trying out on one of your next visits. For non-DVC members, consider renting DVC points from our friends at DVC Rental Store to make your stay at The Island Tower, or any other DVC resort, as affordable and stress-free as possible!

Wailulu Bar & Grill looks great but I do not see it under the dining reservation section of the wdw website
There are no reservations as it is a lounge
