Flying Dumpster, Jackhammer Work Continues, and More Scaffolding at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Magic Kingdom

The refurbishment of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Magic Kingdom continues with Jackhammer work and more scaffolding set up.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Refurbishment

We climbed aboard the Walt Disney World Railroad to get a look at the refurbishment progress of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

We noticed a large yellow hose as we passed by, and crew members were out and actively working.

More scaffolding had been set up in the trench between the Gold Dust Saloon and Dave V. Jones Mine.

Jackhammer work was being done in front of the Gold Dust Saloon and a pile of broken rock was sitting on the green tarps. Two other crew members on the wooden bridge were looking down at the area around them. Other power tools were also lying underneath the bridge.

We also noticed scaffolding had been set up inside the Dave V. Jones Mine and crew members were working inside.

The tree on the mountain range is now completely surrounded by scaffolding. A crew member was nearby and construction equipment was also present to the left of the tree.

We then took a ride on the Liberty Square Riverboat to get a view of the progress at the front of Big Thunder Mountain.

A new adventure awaits as construction progresses on a thrilling theme park ride. Echoing the spirit of Big Thunder Mountain, it features rocky terrain and wooden structures rising amid scaffolding. A shimmering water area in the foreground hints at the wild frontier to come.

There was not as much action on the front side. Cones and scaffolding were still in place just as we had reported in our previous update.

Although there wasn’t much refurbishment work being done on the front of the mountain, we noticed a dumpster flying high, attached to the large yellow crane above the rockwork.

As we rounded the bend to the side of the mountain, we saw some crew members at work around the scaffolding.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will remain closed through the remainder of 2025 and will reopen in 2026 with a “little bit of new magic.” Disney is also developing a new  Villains-themed land for the area as well a new “Cars” area that will replace the current Rivers of America.
