During our recent visit to the Downtown Disney District, we observed scaffolding had been set up and the old facade revealed as construction continues on the former ESPN Zone building.
Former ESPN Zone Construction

The former ESPN Zone at Downtown Disney has been closed since summer of 2018. Permits recently filed by Disneyland Resort have revealed plans to turn the former location into multiple storefronts.

Due to the intense rain and winds in the area over the past week, the scrims that usually cover the building’s facade were rolled up, revealing the former facade before it was branded with Disney+ signage.

Above is a comparison of the building exterior under construction with the revealed facade that was previously hidden behind the Disney+ ads that have been removed. The front of the building has been torn off leaving just a black tarp to cover the former entrance.

Colorful construction walls surround the entire structure. Multi-level scaffolding covers the building’s exterior along with the rolled-up scrim.

Large concrete animated sports players, like the baseball player and skateboarder pictured above, can be seen behind the scaffolding.

Another sign in a window visible over the construction walls reads “We know champions.”

With the new permit filed by Disney, the plans are to split the building into three stores with two on the first floor and one on the second floor.
Although the ESPN Zone closed in 2018 it’s been used at various times for limited-time opportunities such as a photo op experience and MagicBand+ shop.
