The new episode of “We Call It Imagineering” features an in-depth look at the ride vehicles for the new Stark Flight Lab attraction coming to Avengers Campus in Disney California Adventure.

Robert Downey Jr. appeared at SXSW this weekend to talk about the new attraction, which is part of an Avengers Campus expansion also including Avengers: Infinity Defense. Some of the same clips shown at SXSW are in the “We Call It Imagineering” episode, but it takes a closer look at the revolutionary attraction.

Stark Flight Lab puts technology front and center, instead of hidden behind the scenes. Guests will sit in “gyro-kinetic pods” that move along a track before arriving at a robotic arm.

The robotic arm will then attach to the back of the pod — the robot link transfer. Then the arm lifts guests into the air for a flight test.

“We Call It Imagineering” showed people riding a robotic arm as part of testing.

During the design process, Imagineers likened the robotic arms to a kick line. They decided to bring that dance element into the actual attraction.

They modeled the movements of the robotic arms after dancers, giving each arm emotion and personality.
Robert Downey Jr. also noted the robots resembled DUM-E from the Iron Man films, which Imagineers also incorporated into the attraction.
The new “We Call It Imagineering” episode also contained behind-the-scenes looks at a new “Cars” attraction, “Monsters, Inc.” door coaster, and Raiponce Tangled Spin.
