Marvel Studios announced that Ian McKellen will join some of his fellow X-Men actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Ian McKellen Joins ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Cast
McKellen’s name was revealed as part of an hours-long livestream announcing the “Avengers: Doomsday” cast.
McKellen has famously portrayed Erik Lehnsherr / Magneto several times, starting with the 2000 “X-Men” film. After Disney acquired Fox and, therefore, the X-Men franchise, they began incorporating X-Men into the MCU. This most recently proved successful with the box office smashing “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
Patrick Stewart appeared as a version of Professor X in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” and Kelsey Grammer played Beast for a brief scene at the end of “The Marvels.” Stewart and Grammer’s names were also revealed as part of the livestream.
Immediately after revealing McKellen’s name, Marvel revealed Alan Cumming, who portrayed the X-Man Nightcrawler, will also join the cast.
That said, given the MCU’s dabbling with multiverses, we cannot be 100% sure the actors are portraying these characters or what versions of the characters they may be portraying.
“Avengers: Doomsday” will be in theaters on May 1, 2026, followed by “Avengers: Secret Wars” on May 7, 2027.
