During a media event this week, Disney shared that the updates to the reimagined Test Track at EPCOT will be focused on the ride experience itself, as opposed to the pre- and post-shows of updates past.
Test Track Reimagining
Across its history, the previous updates for Test Track at EPCOT have primarily focused on the pre- and post-shows for the attraction. With Disney now in the throes of another reimagining, the updates being added will focus on the ride experience itself. The last overhaul for the attraction took place in 2012.
For example, the scene shown in the concept art above will feel as though riders are driving through a real forest. This sequence replaces the section of the ride that featured laser trees, and will instead be packed with dense greenery. Walt Disney Imagineering filed permits for new sets to be installed last summer.
Announced at Destination D23 in September 2023, this reimagining will take inspiration from the original World of Motion attraction, bringing its “spirit of optimism” to Test Track. The attraction closed for refurbishment in July 2024, and is scheduled to open in late 2025. No specific opening date has been announced.
With this reimagining, the ride will revert to its original General Motors sponsorship, rather than being presented by Chevrolet. When Test Track opened in 1999 to replace World of Motion, it was known officially as “Test Track Presented by General Motors.” Chevrolet took over as sponsor in 2012, and is a division of General Motors. The company wanted to focus on different branding after filing for bankruptcy in 2009.
A permit was filed to install new signage for the attraction, presumably with the General Motors branding, earlier this year. Walt Disney Imagineering shared a behind-the-scenes video that shared a look at the gutted Test Track queue earlier this month.
