This summer’s Marvel film “Fantastic Four: First Steps” will see Joseph Quinn join the cast portraying a “different version” of Johnny Storm/The Human Torch.

Four superheroes in blue outfits, each adorned with a number 4 emblem, stand on a circular platform. Behind them looms a large Monster's Inc.-style number 4 symbol, towering like the plunge of a Vertical Lift Coaster. Their determined stares promise adventures ahead.

According to Variety, Quinn recently told Entertainment Weekly that his version of the character will be different than previous versions.

Two other “Fantastic Four” films saw Chris Evans play the character of Johnny, as a “cocky, womanizing playboy.” Quinn says “that’s no longer sexy.”

Speaking about the character, Quinn stated,

He’s a man that leads witha lot of brovado, which can be an affront sometimes. But he’s funny. Myself and (Marvel Studios boss) Kevin (Feige) were speaking about previous iterations of him and where we are culturally. He was branded as this womanizing, devil-may-care guy, but is that sexy these days? I don’t think so.

Quinn also said that his version of Johnny is “less callous with other people’s feelings, and hopefully there’s a self-awareness about what’s driving that attention-seeking behavior.”

The director of the “Fantastic Four” film, Matt Shakman, called this version of Johnny “really smart,” saying that he’s not just a “dimwitted hothead.”

Shakman went on to say,

He’s on that spaceship for a reason, and I think sometimes people forget that in various comic stories, he’s been one of the most heroic of them, even if he’s under cutting his heroism at every turn through humor.

Fantastic Four: First Steps” is the first appearance of Marvel’s First Family in the current cinematic universe. Other Fantastic Four films were released in 2005 (with a sequel in 2007), with a reboot film released in 2015. Those renditions, however, are not considered canonical to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

An alternate universe version of Johnny Storm/Human Torch was seen in the film “Deadpool & Wolverine,” where Evans reprised his role from the 2005 film.

The cast of the film stars Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing.

Matt Shakman, director of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” also recently announced that fans shouldn’t expect to see many Marvel Easter eggs in the upcoming film. “Fantastic Four: First Steps” debuts in theaters on July 25, 2025.
