Makeup Options

After checking-in during their booked time, guests are allowed to choose which type of makeup they wish to receive.

Team Members at the desk have cards with pictures of each makeup option available. The first two options were variations of Frankenstein’s Monster.

A third variation of Frankenstein’s Monster called All Stitched Up was also available. The fourth option was called the Celestial Mystic.

The next option was called the Vampire Bat, in a twist on the classic vampire makeup. Following the bat was the Bride of Frankenstein.

The cards included two illustrations of the Wolfman makeup, dubbed the Wolf Pack, in both a standard and facial hair version

The images included a full and youth version of the Vampire Coven makeup.

Likewise, there were also illustrations for both an adult and youth version of the Creature from the Black Lagoon makeup.

The next option was called the Fire Lizard. This option included red scaley paint on one half of the face and white paint on the other side.

The final two options were variations of a Half Skull. One version covered the lower half of the face in white paint, and the other version covered the left half of the face in yellow paint.
The Team Member leading us was perfect at answering some of our questions and offered suggestions for one of our reporters who has facial hair.
Experience Overview

Guests visiting Darkmoor for the Monster Makeup Experience will be escorted inside Dr. Pretorius’ old lab by one of several lab-coat clad Team Members. The space has now been converted into a creepy makeup parlor.

The shelves above the makeup stations are lined with monster-themed props and old makeup kits used by artists.

Ultimately, our reporters chose the Frankenstein’s Monster makeup and the Vampire Bat makeup. We also opted for the Experiment Ticket, which includes the makeup but not any accessories.

Once the makeup session starts, each guest is seated in a black and silver padded chair in front of an ornate, gothic-style mirror.

For all of the makeup styles, the artists begin by painting on a base color using a wider sponge. The Frankenstein’s Monster makeup was, as expected, bright green.

The Vampire Bat makeup began as a base white shade on the cheekbones and forehead.

The makeup process happens relatively quickly, and most of the base color was applied within a few minutes.

During the process, the Team Members were careful to not get any makeup on our clothes. We were not provided with any protective plastic to wear over an outfit.

For guests with facial hair, the base makeup was applied on the upper half of the face first.

After the base, the makeup artists began applying additional colors with smaller sponges and brushes.

For the Vampire Bat, black paint was added around the eyes and nose.

The space for the actual makeover is relatively small, with only four makeup stations in this back room. The front half of the building is used for the payment counter and the displays with the monster accessories.

The makeup artist finished applying the Vampire Bat lines around the cheekbones and nose first.

By this point, the Frankenstein’s Monster makeup was only missing a few final details.

The makeup artist added lines for the stitching on the forehead and left side of the face.

Meanwhile, the Vampire Bat makeup was completed by blending the remaining colors into our reporter’s beard. The makeup lacked the definite lines for the regular Vampire Bat style, but it blended well into the hair and worked to complete the look.

The Team Member informed us that the experience uses a combination of water-based and waterproof face paint that resists smudging. While the makeup may run a little if it gets too wet, it will not wipe off with a little touch or some sweat. We were provided with some makeup wipes to take home as a part of the experience.

The Frankenstein’s Monster makeup was finished first and looked just like the example picture.

The Vampire Bat makeup took a few more minutes, but the artist spent a little extra time making sure the colors blended well into our reporter’s facial hair.

The Team Member took the time to make sure the makeup looked great for each guest’s needs, even if it took longer than the advertised 20 minutes.

The makeup was much more vivid in the direct sunlight once we exited the building.

We couldn’t resist showing Ygor our new monstrous appearances. It led to a great interaction where he warned us to head back into Frankenstein Manor because we escaped.

The makeup also gave us an immediate urge to take several monster-themed photos around Darkmoor. Tickets for the experience starting on May 22 can be reserved at the official Darkmoor Monster Makeup Experience page on the Universal website.
