Val Kilmer, known for “Willow” and “Top Gun,” passed away from pneumonia on April 1 at age 65.
Kilmer barely appeared in public or on screen in the past 10 years due to health problems, including a two-year battle with throat cancer. His final film appearance was in “Top Gun: Maverick” (2022), reprising his role from the original 1986 film as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky.
Kilmer portrayed Madmartigan in Lucasfilm’s “Willow” (1988). He was unable to return for the Disney+ sequel series but appeared via archive footage and his son, Jack Kilmer, voiced the character.
Kilmer’s breakout role came in comedy action film “Top Secret!” (1984). He gained critical acclaim for portraying Jim Morrison in the 1991 biographical film “The Doors.” He took over the role of Batman after Michael Keaton refused to return for “Batman Forever” (1995).
His other films include “Tombstone” (1993), “True Romance” (1993), “Heat” (1995), “The Ghost and the Darkness” (1996), “The Saint” (1997), “The Prince of Egypt” (1998), “Alexander” (2004), “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” (2005), and “The Snowman” (2017). He played Detective Dobson in the series finale of TV show “Psych.” He wrote “Val” (2021), a documentary about his life directed by Leo Scott and Ting Poo, and narrated by Jack Kilmer.
Kilmer voiced Bravo in Disney’s “Planes” (2013), a spin-off from Pixar’s “Cars,” alongside fellow “Top Gun” star Anthony Edwards. He voiced Walker Sloan in the 2011 video game “Spider-Man: Edge of Time.”
